ABCs of Travel

I don’t do many lists here, nor do I often follow the latest “chain posting” trend, but the travel ABC’s sounded really fun. So here are mine.

Off to the Wild Blue Yonder

My wife is on her round the world trip and will be in New Zealand through Christmas and New Years. So we planned for me to come down and meet her. So again the frightened-of-flying guy is getting on a flight again. This time it will be the longest flight I will have ever been on, even when I was flying. This will be two flights about 11 hours with a long connection in Hong Kong.

Up at First Light

Due to Germany’s position on the globe I will be up before first light tomorrow. I live at 48 degrees North, which means that the sun will rise at 5:37 am. At this point I need to be at the train station headed to Frankfurt. So I will wake up even before the sun is up to drag myself down to the tram and into town. Read more to find out why.

Happy Birthday Grounded Traveler

April 17, 2010 was the first post on the revamped Grounded Traveler. I had a ragged blog before that, but since then I have been more directed about it. I picked a niche of writing about the expat life in addition to travels in Europe and all of the mental gymnastics that happens in both. So happy birthday Grounded Traveler. Yes, I am a little late writing this, but I’m sure the blog won’t mind. It got cake on the weekend anyway. So here is a look back over the last year.

Writer’s Block

Ok, technically I don’t have writer’s block. I was perfectly able to write 1000 words this weekend, just not in one post. So I have a bunch of half finished drafts that aren’t full posts. Instead of fighting this and squeezing hard on my writing muscles, I decided to go with it and highlight some other people that didn’t have writer’s block.

Check out some great posts from around the web.

A Moment of Thanks

This post marks roughly 3 months of me writing on this blog. At the time I started it in April I was feeling a bit lost and cramped in my life. I re-imagined my blog as a creative outlet. Three months later I am able to look at this and be thankful for it. I am ever striving for a better life and a more fulfilling life. To see and experience great places and meet wonderful people. Be influenced by the beauty of this world and resist being influenced by its ugliness.

I will continue to do these things and pursue a better me. But at this moment, I am talking a deep breath and thinking about and being thankful for that which I already have seen and experienced. I seem to often write on doubt, fear and frustration in life and travel. This post is about inspiration and gratitude.

The Hundertwasser Epiphany

“When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” This isn’t just about real flesh and blood teachers to me, I see this also as the idea that when you are thinking about something, you see related things all over.  I found my latest ‘teacher’ in Vienna: in a video of all things. I have been [...]

The Passion of a Traveler and an Artist

In the past week that I have been actively planning out this blog project, I have felt more alive and inspired than any time in the recent past.  To revel in one of my soul’s passions of travel and to see a way to share that with others has really energized me. This passion is [...]
